Mitral regurgitation recovery and atrial reverse remodeling following pulmonary vein isolation procedure in patients with atrial fibrillation: a proof of concept cardiac MRI study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a chronic and progressive disease, and if uncontrolled results in permanent remodeling of the myocardium. Reverse remodeling of the left atrium (LA) after the successful pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) in recurrent/chronic AF may occur, however, mitral regurgitation (MR) recovery after the successful PVI has not been demonstrated but would be an important factor in PVI durability.

Background: Percutaneous Transeptal Mitral Commisurotomy (PTMC) has been used in treating mitral stenosis with variable success, its main complication being mitral incompetence. There is a need to define the subgroup of the patients who benefit mostly from the procedure. Methods: We studied 110 patients (age 17 to 60 years mean 33.2) with mitral stenosis. PTMC was performed though femoral vein....
متن کاملConduction recovery at the mitral isthmus triggers atrial fibrillation in a patient with rate-dependent 'block' and recurrent atrial fibrillation after previous pulmonary vein isolation and left atrial linear ablation.
During a redo procedure for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) recurrence, mitral isthmus-dependent atrial tachycardia due to a gap in the previous line and rate-dependent slow conduction in sinus rhythm were demonstrated. After initial achievement of mitral isthmus block, adenosine reproducibly triggered conduction recovery and initiated AF. Further ablation led to AF termination and stable b...
متن کاملLong-term results after the box pulmonary vein isolation procedure for chronic atrial fibrillation in mitral valve surgery.
BACKGROUND We hypothesized that chronic atrial fibrillation (AF) originated from the pulmonary veins, and was maintained by irregular activations of the posterior left atrium. We had performed the box pulmonary vein isolation procedure for the elimination of chronic AF associated with solitary mitral valve disease from 1999 to 2004. This paper evaluated the long-term results of this procedure o...
متن کاملCommemorating twenty years since the first catheter-based pulmonary vein isolation to treat atrial fibrillation by ablation.
Surgical pulmonary vein isolation by ablation as a treatment for atrial fibrillation was first performed in isolation in 1996 at Hospital de Santa Cruz in Portugal, as a complementary therapy to mitral valve surgery in patients with rheumatic mitral valve disease, in order to reduce the morbidity associated with maze surgery. This innovative surgical approach, performed by Queiroz e Melo, repla...
